Here’s a little fly that has saved my day several times this season. Tie it on a Gamakatsu C14S Glo Bug hook, size 2 (which is much smaller than the size implies), and keep the overall fly length at about 4mm. I use black bucktail with no Krystal Flash, an ice Dub body and fluorescent orange hackle, on the short side. No weight.
I have fished this fly in shallow water and deep water, clear and green, early, midday, and late. I pull this little guy out after kings have ignored larger flies – and have found they will eat this fly decisively at times.
Funny to think about this fly going up against a fist-size wad of salmon eggs or a ten-inch Kwikfish.
