Had the pleasure of test fishing a Burkheimer prototype salmon fly rod last week. This is a two hander I asked Kerry and Nate to develop for use with overhand delivery of shooting heads fishing for Chinook salmon. I wanted a rod with an upper section capable of loading properly with a shooting head of about 300 gr. but with a heavier butt section capable of doing some heavy lifting when playing a “nice-sized” king salmon. Dude, all king salmon are nice.
The result was: wow!
Hundreds of casts, half a dozen good grabs, and one Chinook brought to hand and released. This is a rod that will fill a crucial niche for you salmon fishers out there, especially if your shoulder is a little sore from all that double hauling.
More details and raves to follow.
